Austria’s meteorological spring of 2026 was the driest in the country’s 169-year measurement history, with nationwide precipitation falling 50 percent below the 1991–2020 climate average, according to a preliminary assessment by GeoSphere Austria.

The deficit shattered the previous negative records set in 1865 and 1946, when precipitation was 41 percent below the long-term average. Geosphere climatologist Alexander Orlik said that in the area average, half of the typical March-to-May rainfall was missing — a situation unprecedented since precipitation records began.

The drought was exacerbated by a preceding winter that was also low in precipitation. Orlik noted that while recurring rainfall in May temporarily eased conditions in upper soil layers in some regions, the overall balance remained drastic.
