The Austrian government wants to largely ban social media for children under 14 with a draft law and, according to State Secretary for Digitalisation Alexander Pröll (ÖVP), relies on robust age verification by third-party providers.

The draft, which according to Pröll could be presented at the summer cabinet meeting on Monday, provides for a ban on "addictive mechanisms" for under-14s. Children and young people would encounter hate, violence, body shaming, misogyny and dangerous beauty ideals on social media on a daily basis, Pröll is quoted as saying: "Viele Eltern fühlen sich damit allein gelassen und fragen sich, wie sie ihre Kinder in dieser digitalen Welt schützen können."
