At the first negotiation meeting of the EU European Affairs Ministers on the Multiannual Financial Framework 2028 to 2034 in Luxembourg, Austria rejected the proposal of the Cypriot Council Presidency as insufficient and demanded substantial cuts.
The EU European Affairs Ministers met on Tuesday in Luxembourg to negotiate for the first time on concrete figures for the next EU Multiannual Financial Framework for the period 2028 to 2034. The proposal of the Cypriot EU Council Presidency provides for an expenditure framework of around 1.948 trillion euros in current prices for the seven years.
Before the start of the meeting, European Affairs Minister Claudia Bauer (ÖVP) reaffirmed Austria's demand for substantial cuts compared to this draft. For Austria, this was absolutely not a landing zone, said Bauer. With this, Vienna positioned itself as a brake right at the beginning of the talks.
