Vienna, Austria — May 18, 2026

Austria's birth rate continues its downward trend, with new data showing fewer live births and a growing proportion of women choosing to remain childless.

Declining Fertility and Rising Childlessness

Austria's fertility rate has reached historic lows, dropping to 1.31 children per woman two years ago and projected to fall further to 1.29 in 2025. The number of live births declined to approximately 75,700 in 2025, down from 77,000 in 2024. Demographer Kryštof Zeman predicts this trend will persist, stating, *"Die Geburtenrate wird wohl auch noch weiter hinuntergehen"* ("The birth rate will likely continue to decline").

The proportion of childless women has risen sharply since the mid-1980s, when only about 7% of women in Austria had no children. By 2024, nearly 20% of women born in 1980 were childless, and projections suggest that over 25% of women born after 1990 will remain without children. *"Laut unserer Prognose wird dieser Anteil bei Frauen, die nach 1990 geboren wurde, über 25 Prozent steigen"* ("According to our forecast, this proportion will exceed 25% for women born after 1990"), Zeman noted.
