Vienna, 16 June 2026
Last year, almost a third (32.8 percent) of the 75,437 children born alive in Austria were delivered by cesarean section, as Statistik Austria reported on Tuesday in Vienna.
Background
In 1995, the cesarean section rate in Austria was still 12.4 percent. Since then, the rate has more than two-and-a-half times. Statistik Austria published the new figures as part of its annual birth statistics.
Statistik Austria attributes the increase over the past 30 years, among other things, to the fact that women in Austria are becoming mothers later in life, and that the likelihood of a cesarean delivery increases with age. "In 2025, women aged 35 and over had a cesarean birth approximately 1.6 times more often than those under 25," said Manuela Lenk, Director General for Subject-Matter Statistics at Statistik Austria.
