Cement consumption in Austria has fallen by around 25 percent within three to four years since the end of the construction boom, according to the Association of Austrian Cement Producers (VÖZ).
Market development and exports as a pillar
Despite the slump on the domestic market, domestic plants produced 4.53 million tonnes of cement last year, around 0.4 percent more than in 2024. According to VÖZ Managing Director Sebastian Spaun, this slight increase is attributable solely to additional exports. "Dass die österreichischen Werke zuletzt dennoch etwas mehr produzierten, ist ausschließlich auf zusätzliche Exporte zurückzuführen. Diese Strategie ist aber nicht nachhaltig bedienbar." Cement consumption in Austria is thus at a similarly low level as in Germany and France, where it has recently fallen to values below pre-World War II levels.
