Austrian European Affairs Minister Claudia Bauer (ÖVP) called in an interview with "Welt am Sonntag" for reducing the number of EU Commissioners and making the EU Commission leaner and more efficient.

Bauer described the current size of the EU Commission as an "inflationary number" and questioned whether all 27 EU countries actually each need a commissioner along with a cabinet, staff, and offices. When asked by the newspaper whether she knows all 27 EU Commissioners by name, she answered clearly: "Nein." (No.) The point, she said, was to openly discuss "ob Europa nicht auch mit deutlich weniger Kommissaren effizienter arbeiten könnte" (whether Europe could not also work more efficiently with significantly fewer commissioners).
