Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker called for a stricter spending policy of the European Union at a meeting with the EU net contributors in Berlin, while EU Council President António Costa urged investments in defence and competitiveness.

At the meeting of the so-called net contributor states in Berlin, the future direction of the multiannual EU financial framework was the focus. According to the news agency APA, Stocker spoke out in favour of limiting EU spending to what is absolutely necessary and not taking on any additional debt.

Austria has for years been among those member states that pay more into the EU budget than they receive back. According to APA, Stocker described it as contradictory when, on the one hand, demands were being made for more EU funds while, on the other, national austerity measures had to be taken. He also pointed out that a reversal of the recently decided tobacco tax increase would cost the federal budget around 600 million euros per year.
