Austria's Kayak Trio Snatches Surprise World Championship Bronze in Team Event

Just one day earlier, Felix Oschmautz had made a statement at the World Championship opener in the kayak cross time trial. The athlete, who had finished fourth at the Tokyo 2021 Games, achieved a strong fifth place in the time trial, underlining his form on the demanding course.

Strong Preliminary Result from Oschmautz

The Austrian squad was also called upon in the preliminary round of the kayak single, which was also held on Tuesday. Mario Leitner mastered the task with confidence and advanced to the semifinals in 13th place without any mistakes. The Carinthian, however, only narrowly made it into the next round in 29th, but also retained the chance of a top placement.

Single Preliminary Round: Leitner Confident, Steinbrenner with Difficulty

Youngster Max Steinbrenner had a much harder time in the individual time trial: among 80 competitors, the junior world champion finished only 57th. In the team event, however, the young athlete showed no nerves and contributed his share to the medal.

The competition took place on the grounds that will host the Olympic canoe events in 2028. This gave the event additional significance for the athletes: anyone who won a medal here also proved that they could handle the course that will be the focus of the Olympic competitions in two years.
