Vienna, 15 July 2026
Austria's regulatory authority Schienen Control published a new report on 15 July 2026, according to which rail traffic in Austria reached a record of 138.9 million passenger train kilometres in 2025, while roughly every second delay in long-distance rail traffic is attributable to causes abroad.
As Schienen-Control chief Maria-Theresia Röhsler explained on the occasion of the report, delays in long-distance rail traffic are a recurring issue. „Verspätungen im überregionalen Zugverkehr sind immer wieder Thema“, she said. At the same time, she noted that the problem remained within certain limits in international comparison.
According to Röhsler, this applies to roughly half of the cases: „Etwa die Hälfte der Fälle seien auf Ereignisse aus dem Ausland zurückzuführen“. Station announcements, she said, often indicate that a delay from abroad is to blame. „Baustellen auf internationalen Korridoren sorgen nicht nur für Verspätungen, sondern auch für Mehrkosten“, the report stated.
