The Austrian federal government has sent a draft bill into consultation that ties access to certain social networks and video platforms to a one-time age verification from age 14. Among the affected services are TikTok, Instagram, YouTube and Snapchat, while messenger services such as WhatsApp are to be exempt.

The Austrian federal government on Monday, following the summer cabinet meeting in Wals-Siezenheim, sent a draft amendment to the Audiovisual Media Services Act (AMD-G) into consultation and simultaneously notified it to the European Commission. The draft is intended to tie access to certain social networks and video platforms to a one-time age verification from age 14.

Chancellor Christian Stocker (ÖVP) spoke of an important step after the council of ministers in Salzburg.
