Austria’s Education Ministry has approved sweeping reforms to the Matura graduation exams, including a mandatory 30% quota for oral assessments and making final theses optional, set to take effect in 2027.

New Rules for Oral Exams and Cheating

Starting in 2027, students will face stricter guidelines for oral Matura exams, with a newly introduced minimum quota of 30% for participation. Previously, students only needed to "mitwirken" (participate) without a fixed benchmark, leading to inconsistencies in grading. The change aims to standardize expectations across both academic (AHS) and vocational (BHS) high schools.

The reforms also address cheating with modern technology. "Künftig gilt es schon als Schummeln, wenn man eines dabeihat und es jederzeit einsatzbereit wäre," officials stated, clarifying that merely possessing a banned device ready for use will now constitute cheating. This follows similar thresholds introduced for written exams in 2021 to curb disputes over ambiguous rules.
