Austria to nominate record scorer Arnautović for state decoration

Arnautović, Austria's all-time leading scorer and most-capped player, is bringing his international career to a close after 137 appearances and 49 goals for the national team. A record-breaking career

State Secretary for Sport Michaela Schmidt, a member of the SPÖ, praised Arnautović as both an exceptional player and a defining personality in Austrian football. "Marko Arnautović ist ein Ausnahmespieler und eine Persönlichkeit, die den österreichischen Fußball über viele Jahre bereichert hat. Vor allem aber hat er für Österreich stets alles gegeben", Schmidt said.

Schmidt also highlighted the striker's evolution into a leader within the squad. "Besonders beeindruckend ist seine Entwicklung zu einem echten Teamplayer und Führungsspieler, der den Zusammenhalt der Mannschaft entscheidend geprägt hat. Dafür gebühren ihm unser aufrichtiger Dank und unsere höchste Anerkennung", she added.

According to Schmidt, Arnautović played a central role in one of the most successful chapters of the Austrian Football Association (ÖFB). "Als tragende Säule unseres Nationalteams hatte er wesentlichen Anteil an einer der erfolgreichsten Epochen des ÖFB", the State Secretary said.

Tributes from government

Babler, who serves both as Vice Chancellor and Sports Minister, framed Arnautović as more than just a sporting figure. "Marko Arnautović ist damit nicht nur einer der größten Fußballer, die Österreich hervorgebracht hat, sondern auch ein Vorbild für viele junge Menschen", Babler said, describing the forward as a role model for young people in the country.

The Vice Chancellor also pointed to the qualities required to reach record-capped status. "Rekordnationalspieler wird man nicht allein durch Talent, sondern durch Einsatz, Beständigkeit und den Willen, immer wieder alles für sein Land zu geben", Babler said.

In a broader tribute, Babler said Arnautović had embodied what it means to represent Austria. "Marko Arnautović hat wie kaum ein anderer gezeigt, was es bedeutet, mit Leidenschaft, Stolz und ganzem Herzen für Österreich aufzulaufen. Über viele Jahre hat er Millionen Menschen begeistert, unvergessliche Momente geschaffen und unser Nationalteam entscheidend geprägt", the Vice Chancellor stated.

The Ehrenzeichen process

The proposed Ehrenzeichen der Republik Österreich is one of the formal state honours Austria bestows on individuals for outstanding service. The nomination now moves through the standard process for such awards, with the final decision resting outside the Sports Ministry.

Arnautović's departure closes a chapter that Schmidt and Babler both described as historic for the ÖFB. His 137 caps and 49 goals place him at the top of Austria's all-time records in both categories, and his tenure coincided with a period in which the national team reached major tournaments and produced results that resonated with Austrian fans.
