Austrian education authorities and political parties are debating the introduction of formal heat-warning levels for schools as the country prepares for the next heatwave, with unions and the NEOS party calling for binding guidance on classroom cooling and ventilation.
The discussion comes as Austria braces for another summer heatwave, with temperatures expected to climb across several regions. Schools, which often lack air conditioning, have become a focal point of concern for parents, teachers, and administrators. The Austrian Trade Union Youth (Österreichische Gewerkschaftsjugend) has joined educators in calling for clearer standards on how schools should respond when temperatures rise.
Andreas Schaffhauser, a representative of the trade union youth organization, has been among those urging the education ministry to act. "Kommen um das Thema in Zukunft nicht herum," he said, underscoring that schools will not be able to avoid the issue going forward. The union has argued that without binding rules, individual schools are left to improvise during heat events, leading to inconsistent responses.
