In Canton Zurich, several schools have unilaterally shortened classes due to the heat, while the cantonal Volksschulamt emphasizes that there is no legal basis for heat days off.

Die Schulpflege Meilen (Meilen school board) decided to cancel afternoon classes on June 25 and 26 for all students due to the high temperatures. Rektor Jörg Walser described the decision as «pragmatisch und einstimmig». The decisive factor was heat warning level four, the second-highest level. Teaching with up to 26 students is simply not possible at 35 degrees, Walser says.

The Primarschule Dübendorf (Dübendorf primary school) also sent children home early on hot afternoons, according to a school announcement. The reasons cited were exceptionally high temperatures and a lack of cooling options; the local outdoor pool is currently being renovated.
