Austria Wien won the Austrian women's football championship on Friday after a 101st-minute goal by Carina Wenninger secured a 1-1 draw against defending champions SKN St. Pölten in the season finale at the Generali Arena.
A Final Twist in Stoppage Time
The match appeared to be heading St. Pölten's way when Leila Peneau converted a penalty in the 98th minute, sparking celebrations among the title holders who believed they had done enough to retain their crown.
But deep into stoppage time, Wenninger pounced on a loose ball to score an equalizer that silenced the visitors and sent the home crowd into raptures, ensuring Austria Wien finished two points ahead of their rivals.
