Austria Wien has won the first leg of the second qualifying round of the UEFA Conference League at FK Liepaja in Jurmala 2-0 (1-0), securing a strong starting position for the return leg on Thursday.

Difficult start on rain-soaked pitch

At the Sloka Stadium in the Baltic Sea resort of Jurmala, located around 200 kilometers from Liepaja, the Viennese initially struggled on the rain-soaked pitch. FK Liepaja, fifth in the Latvian year-round championship, defended passionately and surprised the visitors with aggressive man-marking. In front of 1,000 spectators, including around 200 traveling Austria fans, a scrappy opening phase developed in which the Violets had difficulty establishing their usual combination play.
