Austrian Airports Record Fewer Passengers in the First Half of the Year

At Vienna Airport, by far the largest airport in Austria, the changes in national flight volume were particularly noticeable. Vienna remains the country's most important hub, however, and bundles a large share of international traffic.

Developments at the Regional Locations

A downward trend was also evident at the regional airports. The airports in Salzburg, Graz, Linz, Klagenfurt, and Innsbruck recorded fewer takeoffs and landings in the first half of the year. Smaller locations, which are more dependent on tourist traffic and seasonal fluctuations, were particularly affected.

Klagenfurt Airport in Carinthia, which is used above all by tourists from the Alpine region, likewise had to absorb losses according to the available data. The lower occupancy reflects weaker demand for domestic Austrian and regional connections.

In Linz and Innsbruck, two other locations of significance for business travel and winter tourism, movements also declined. Faced with this development, airport operators are confronting the question of how they can adapt their offerings to changed demand.

Reasons for the Decline

The industry attributes the decline among other things to weaker demand for air travel and to changed travel habits. The economic situation in several European source markets also likely played a role, according to the publication.

For the coming months, the airport operators expect a subdued development. A reversal of the trend is to be expected only when demand for air travel – particularly in the tourism segment – picks up again, according to their assessment.

Outlook for the Second Half of the Year

The Austro-Airports statistics are published regularly and serve as an important indicator for the development of Austrian air traffic. The current half-year figure of 133,004 flight movements lies noticeably below the level of the comparable period in 2025.

The figures make clear that Austrian air traffic is in a phase of consolidation. Industry representatives emphasize that adjustments to route networks and capacities are necessary in order to improve occupancy.
