Vienna Airport Loses Almost Six Percent of Passengers in June

Reasons: Low-Cost Reduction and Middle East Crisis

Vienna Airport is offsetting the loss primarily through its route network in the aviation industry. From Vienna Airport, roughly 200 different destinations can be reached. Austrian Airlines (AUA) flies to more than 120 destinations, while Ryanair serves 73 destinations in Europe from Vienna.

Group with Malta and Kosice Grows Slightly

Unlike the Vienna location, the entire Vienna Airport Group — which also includes the airports in Malta and Kosice — developed differently. The group closed the first half of the year with a gain of 1.9 percent (just under 20 million passengers). Including Malta and Kosice, passenger volume in June rose minimally by 0.2 percent to over 4 million passengers.

From a macroeconomic perspective, Vienna Airport is nevertheless sending mixed signals. In the first quarter of 2026, revenue rose to almost 240 million euros, and quarterly profit grew by 5.3 percent to 42 million euros. For the full year, the company expects a profit of 210 million euros, thereby confirming its previous forecast.

Cargo and Investments as Counterweights

The cargo business also developed positively, bucking the trend in passenger numbers. Cargo volume rose by 5.0 percent in June to 27,058 tons, further increasing the Vienna location's significance in the logistics segment.

Despite the June decline, the airport is sticking to its medium-term investment plans. By 2030, the airport intends to spend significant sums: 1.5 billion euros are to be invested in the Vienna and Malta locations to safeguard competitiveness over the long term.

Outlook for the Summer Season

With regard to the current 2026 summer season, the route network remains broadly positioned. Around 200 destinations are to be reachable from Vienna during the summer months, supplemented by AUA's connections and those of low-cost carriers. Whether the low point in June has already been passed or whether further months of subdued demand will follow depends, according to the airport, also on the further development of the geopolitical situation.

The next traffic figures will traditionally be published with the half-year report. Should the crisis in the Near and Middle East intensify or further routes be cut, the group could once again put its annual forecast under review.
