The Austrian Armed Forces began an evacuation of around 200 stranded people in the Tyrolean Kaunertal on Monday using two helicopters, after severe storms and mudslides had struck the region.
For the evacuation on Monday, the Austrian Armed Forces are deploying one AB212 helicopter and one AW169, as the Ministry of Defence announced in a press release. The two aircraft belong to the Air Force and had already taken off on Sunday for reconnaissance flights into the disaster zone. The actual evacuation operation is set to begin on Monday at 08:00.
Since around 200 people are stranded and need to be evacuated, the Austrian Armed Forces are sending two Air Force helicopters into the disaster zone. The poor weather conditions had previously significantly hampered rescue efforts. Only after the first reconnaissance flights were completed on Sunday could the evacuation flights with an AW169 "Lion" and an AB 212 be launched on Monday.
