The Austrian Armed Forces (Bundesheer) are digitizing parts of the enlistment process: Starting this coming autumn, individuals liable for enlistment will be able to voluntarily register online via "bundesheeronline.at". Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner and State Secretary for Digitalization Alexander Pröll presented the procedure in Klagenfurt.

The Austrian Armed Forces will digitize parts of the enlistment procedure beginning in autumn 2026: individuals liable for enlistment will in future be able to voluntarily register online via "bundesheeronline.at" and complete part of the process digitally, Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner (ÖVP) and State Secretary for Digitalization Alexander Pröll (ÖVP) announced on Thursday in Klagenfurt.
Background: Bundesheeronline.at as the new platform
The new project is called "Digitalisierung Wehrdienst" and builds on the already existing platform "bundesheeronline.at". According to the Defense Ministry, this platform has existed since 2023. The Armed Forces say that more than 90,000 users are now registered there; several tens of thousands of procedures have already been processed digitally. Following the successful launch, the service is to be rolled out across all of Austria by October 2026.
At the presentation, Defense Minister Tanner stressed the central importance of basic military servicemen for the armed forces: "Die Grundwehrdiener sind die Basis für unser Heer" – in a further remark, she also spoke of the "Fundament unseres Bundesheeres". Tanner expressed her conviction that digitalization will shorten the overall enlistment process and make it more convenient for those liable for enlistment. Officials spoke of a "verkürzten Gesamtprozedere".
Advance participation as the centerpiece of the procedure
What is being introduced is a so-called "Vorab-Teilnahme an der Stellung". This digital preliminary stage is "das Herzstück" of the new solution. At the same time, those responsible made clear: "Das Herzstück der Stellung ist die medizinische und psychologische Untersuchung" – this examination itself will in any case remain in person and cannot be replaced digitally. A shortening of the enlistment procedure itself is expressly not planned.
Participation in the digital process is explicitly voluntary. "Die Teilnahme an der digitalen Abwicklung ist immer freiwillig", it was stated on Thursday. Individuals liable for enlistment can therefore continue to register via the previous, classic route by mail and complete all steps in person. In this way, the Ministry is responding to potential concerns of persons who, for various reasons, do not wish or are not able to switch to digital channels.
Talents tool and digital services
The digital preliminary participation works in concrete terms as follows: Anyone who receives an information letter for the digital enlistment process can register on "bundesheeronline.at". There, master data can be entered, documents uploaded, and information on pre-existing conditions or allergies provided. If, for example, a person states that they suffer from an allergy, they can attach proof online straight away: "Es kommt hin und wieder vor, dass dieser Nachweis bei der Stellung selbst vergessen wird", a spokesperson explained during the presentation.
A dedicated "Talents tool" is used to guide young people "zielgerichtet zu Infos" and shows them the opportunities the Armed Forces offer – from obtaining various driving licenses to medical service. The tool is intended to help those liable for enlistment gain an overview of the various careers and training opportunities in the military before they attend the actual enlistment.
Pröll: Enter data only once
Organizational simplifications are also part of the package: those liable for enlistment will be able to reschedule their enlistment appointment online and submit medical certificates as justification. Appointment reminders will in future be sent by email – "ein Zettel, der mit der Post kommt, wird leicht einmal verlegt", said the responsible spokesperson. Those who miss an appointment or need to reschedule should in future be able to get in touch more easily than before.
Pröll emphasized the practical benefit for citizens: "einmal Daten eingeben, nicht mehrfach erfassen." The summons, information letters, and the rail voucher for the trip to the medical examination are also to be sent digitally instead of by letter in future. The State Secretary for Digitalization expects "eine bessere Datenqualität und einen vereinfachten, verbesserten Ablauf" from the new procedure. He spoke of a "großen Mehrwert, auch für die Stellungspflichtigen".
Significance for the military service reform
The background to the reform is the expectation that the overall procedure will become more citizen-friendly and more efficient for the administration. Duplicate and multiple entries are to be eliminated, and missing documents are to occur less frequently. The Armed Forces also hope this will deliver better data quality, which in turn can be used for the further processing of enlistment results.
The presentation took place in Klagenfurt in Carinthia. According to the Ministry, Carinthia and the neighboring federal state of Salzburg were among the regions in which the new digital procedure had already been tested for some time. The roll-out across Austria is now planned by October 2026. This means the launch falls in the second half of the year, during which particularly large numbers of those liable for enlistment usually receive their appointment.
With the project, the Defense Ministry is also responding to the general trend toward digitalization of public administrative services in Austria. Platforms such as "bundesheeronline.at" are intended to serve in future as central contact points for military service matters and are to receive further functions step by step. The launch is seen as the first major step, with further digitalization measures to follow.
Outlook following the nationwide roll-out
Against the backdrop of the ongoing debate about the reform of military service and citizenship law, Federal Chancellor Karl Stocker had recently pressed for results on military service and constitutional reform. Digitalization is part of these efforts, albeit at the purely administrative level. The obligation to undergo enlistment itself does not change: it remains compulsory for Austrian men liable for military service; a suspension or replacement by a purely digital procedure is not planned.
The defense budget for 2027/28, meanwhile, envisages an increase compared with previous years, but falls short of original plans. The additional funds are to flow, among other things, into IT infrastructure and the further digitalization of administrative processes. According to the Ministry's presentation, this will also modernize enlistment as one of the first major points of citizen contact between the state and those liable for military service.
Overall, those responsible concluded, the aim is to make the path into basic military service easier, more transparent, and more traceable for young men – without calling into question the physical and psychological examination as the core of enlistment. Whether the new offering will actually be taken up in large numbers by those liable for enlistment should become clear in the coming months following the nationwide roll-out.
