Austria's planned military service reform, which includes extending compulsory service and restructuring civilian alternatives, is unlikely to meet its January 2027 deadline due to legal and logistical hurdles, according to experts and officials.
Reform Plans and Delays
The proposed reform, dubbed "Österreich plus," would extend basic military service to eight months, followed by two months of militia training, while civilian service would be lengthened to twelve months. However, constitutional law expert Peter Bußjäger from the University of Innsbruck has cast doubt on the feasibility of implementing these changes by the target date of January 2027.
