ÖVP caucus leader Ernst Gödl has expressed confidence that the negotiations on reforming Austria's military service, which have been ongoing for months, will result in a compromise.

Background

The Military Service Commission had proposed the "Österreich plus" model, which provides for eight months of basic military service and two months of militia exercises, thus exceeding the current duration of mandatory service of six months. In addition, the commission developed an alternative "Stufenmodell" (phased model), which also starts at six months of basic military service but includes a total of 100 days of militia exercises. The positions of the future coalition partners therefore diverge significantly in some areas.

Gödl, who has held the caucus chairmanship since May of this year as the People's Party's security spokesperson, emphasized that the ÖVP wants to be guided by the recommendations of the technical experts. "Wir möchten uns schon daran orientieren, was die Fachexperten gemeldet haben", said the caucus leader. At the same time, he pointed out that in the end a decision at the level of the party leaders might be necessary: "und möglicherweise wird es am Ende des Tages eine Entscheidung auf Parteichef-Ebene brauchen".
