Austrian Government Advances Agricultural Diesel Subsidy Payments by One Year

Government Statement

Agriculture Minister Norbert Totschnig and Chancellor Christian Stocker emphasized the urgency of the measure in a joint statement:

*"Mit dem Vorziehen der Auszahlung um ein Jahr wirken wir den aktuell hohen Preisen entgegen und stärken die Liquidität unserer Betriebe."*

The statement translates to advancing the payments to counteract high prices and bolster farm liquidity. The subsidy, which expired at the end of 2025, was initially slated for reintroduction in late 2027 but will now resume a year earlier.

Budget Adjustments

The subsidy advance is part of a broader budget package worth €5 billion for 2027 and 2028, designed to meet EU Maastricht criteria through new revenues and reduced expenditures. Officials confirmed that the agricultural diesel subsidy was originally allocated €100 million in the budget before its expiration.

By shifting the payment schedule forward, the government seeks to provide immediate relief to farmers struggling with inflated input costs. The exact implementation and distribution mechanisms remain under discussion.
