Vienna, Austria — May 17, 2026

The Austrian government has decided to advance agricultural diesel subsidy payments by one year to alleviate financial pressures on farmers facing soaring diesel and fertilizer prices.

Subsidy Details and Timeline

The subsidy, expected to amount to approximately 16 cents per liter, will now be paid in December 2026 and 2027 instead of the originally planned December 2027 and 2028. A total of €100 million has been allocated for this purpose in the double budget.

The move comes as farmers grapple with the economic fallout of the Iran war, which has driven up diesel and fertilizer costs. The government aims to strengthen farm liquidity by accelerating the payments. Further details about the subsidy model and payment modalities are still under negotiation.
