Wittau, Austria — May 18, 2026
Austrian energy company OMV has launched a major natural gas production project in Wittau, Lower Austria, which is expected to significantly reduce the country’s dependence on foreign energy sources.
Project Overview
The new gas field in Wittau is estimated to hold 48 terawatt-hours (TWh) of natural gas, equivalent to seven months of Austria’s total gas demand. OMV plans to produce 3,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boe/d), increasing its domestic gas output by 50%. The first phase of the project will supply enough gas for approximately 100,000 households.
OMV has invested €150 million in infrastructure, including a new gas drying facility and a pipeline to Aderklaa. The company aims to extract 11 TWh over the next decade, raising Austria’s self-sufficiency from 6% to 10%.
