The Austrian government announced an agreement on an 'Energiepreiskrisenmechanismus' (energy price crisis mechanism) on Wednesday, designed to cap net electricity prices for households at 10 cents per kilowatt-hour for a basic consumption quota.

The mechanism, part of a broader industrial electricity package, establishes a two-pronged trigger. It will only activate when both the average end-customer electricity price exceeds 16.5 cents net per kilowatt-hour and wholesale prices on the exchange surpass 165 euros per megawatt-hour, with both conditions persisting for a period of three months.

Once triggered, the price for a defined basic consumption quota of 2,900 kilowatt-hours per year will be capped at a net price of 10 cents per kilowatt-hour for households and small and medium-sized enterprises (KMU). Consumption above this basic quota will continue to be charged at the prevailing market price.
