Vienna, 26 May 2026

As the fuel price brake is set to lapse at the end of the month, coalition partners in Vienna are publicly at odds over whether and how to prolong the measure, with the Social Democrats demanding a cap on mineral-oil company margins and the conservative People's Party and liberal NEOS firmly opposing such a step.

The regulation, introduced to cushion the impact of soaring energy costs, is due to expire on 31 May. In May, an additional 2.5 cents per litre was tacked on via the existing mechanism, just as drivers were still paying between 1.80 and 1.90 euros per litre of fuel at the pump. The median pump price in May was 1.858 euros for diesel and 1.763 euros for super, according to the energy regulator E-Control.
