Austrian "Implementation Group" Still Seeking a Partner Country for Return Centers This Year

Talks in Vienna with Denmark

The Danish minister Bødskov, whose country likewise pursues a more restrictive course on asylum policy, signaled fundamental interest in cooperation. Denmark belongs to those EU states that have actively supported such models for some time. Copenhagen's concrete role in the project remained open after the talks, however.

Human rights organizations have voiced criticism of the plan. Observers in Vienna interpret the time pressure as a political signal. Interior Minister Karner is under domestic political pressure to deliver progress on migration policy. The fact that Denmark of all countries is now serving as an interlocutor underscores the axis between Vienna and Copenhagen on migration policy issues.

Legal Hurdles Remain

Legal experts point out that any pilot project must ultimately withstand scrutiny before the European Court of Justice. The plans to date are structurally similar to the former EU-Turkey deal, whose legal viability was likewise disputed. The Austrian working group announced that it would present its results in Brussels in the coming weeks.
