Bruckneudorf, 05 July 2026
The Austrian Armed Forces and the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (Boku) are testing climate-resilient tree species, including the Lebanese cedar, in a roughly four-hectare trial forest at the Bruckneudorf military training area in eastern Austria.
The trial forest is part of a joint research project between the Bundesheer and Boku that has been running since 2012. Researchers are assessing non-native species for their suitability under future climate conditions, focusing on adaptability, economic value, and non-invasive characteristics. "Neben der Libanon-Zeder sind das unter anderem einige Tannen-Arten, die Orient-Buche und die Silber-Linde," the project partners noted, referring to fir species, the Oriental beech and the silver linden among others planted on the site.
