Austrian parliamentary committee concludes review of federal prosecutor appointments

Background to the controversy

The review took place against the backdrop of years of controversy surrounding the Wirtschafts- und Korruptionsstaatsanwaltschaft (WKStA), Austria's anti-corruption prosecution service based in Vienna, and the Innsbruck-based federal prosecutors' office. Several FPÖ, ÖVP and SPÖ figures have publicly questioned aspects of the WKStA's work in recent years.

MPs from the governing and opposition parties used the assessment to question representatives of the Vereinigung der Österreichischen Richter (the Austrian Judges' Association), as well as current and former prosecutors. The committee heard arguments on both sides of the long-running debate over prosecutorial independence.
