Three season's bests for Mayr

Despite the three notable performances, the overall score obtained by Mayr was not enough to approach the top of the standings. The athlete was instead stopped by a sudden physical problem: a violent stomach cramp forced her to slow her pace in the decisive stretch of the course, nullifying the approach work done ahead of the race. The relay, which was aiming for a useful time to return among the protagonists, thus lost ground precisely in the phase where the decisive push was needed.

Cramp stops Mohr

The comparison with rival formations highlighted the technical gap still present between Austria and the nations traditionally more competitive in the discipline. Spain and other teams dictated the pace from the very first legs, imposing a rhythm the Austrians were unable to follow. The feeling among those in the know is that the road to closing in on the upper reaches of the standings is still long and requires further work in technical and athletic preparation terms.

Beyond the overall result, the day nevertheless offered encouraging signs on an individual level. Mayr in fact showed she is capable of improving her standards in several disciplines within the same competition, an aspect the coaches defined as positive in view of the upcoming international appointments. The long jump, the javelin and the 800 metres represent three areas on which to build the rest of the season.

For Theresia Mohr, on the other hand, the Birmingham chapter closed with the bitterness of a physical problem that came at the worst possible moment. The stomach cramp, described as «Seitenstechen» by local tabloids, prevented the athlete from expressing herself fully over a distance and on a course she knows well. The coaching staff said that the walker's general condition will be assessed in the coming days, before defining the calendar of upcoming races.

Outlook after Birmingham

The British trip fits into a season context that for Austria has been uneven so far. The individual results obtained in single disciplines, such as Mayr's three season's bests and Mohr's earlier performances, confirm that technical potential is not lacking. Greater consistency is needed, however, especially in team events, to turn individual performances into weighty collective results.

The federation and the coaching staff have announced that in the coming weeks an in-depth analysis of the Birmingham effort will be carried out, with particular attention to the management of effort and the distribution of legs. The stated objective remains that of becoming competitive again in high-level relay events, starting with the next international commitments on the calendar. Saturday's ninth place therefore remains a starting point rather than a definitive verdict on the season.
