Hamden, July 2, 2026

During an operation in a small community in the U.S. state of Ohio, investigators freed 16 children and teenagers between the ages of 18 months and 18 years from a neglected residence and charged four members of the Siders family with child endangering.

According to authorities, the house was located behind dense brush and trees, screened from view, at the edge of the community of Hamden in Vinton County, which has fewer than 1,000 residents. Attorney General Andy Wilson said at a press conference that no one had expected to find 16 children there. Authorities are now seeking temporary custody of all the minors.

According to investigators, the children spent most of the past four years in a single room measuring roughly 3.6 by 3.6 meters, or about 13 square meters. Some of the children were unable to speak, authorities said. An 18-year-old with a developmental disorder was reportedly unable to spell her own name.
