Lisbon, 22 May 2026

Portuguese authorities have arrested a French couple after their two young sons were found abandoned on a rural road southeast of Lisbon.

The boys, aged 3 and 5, were discovered crying by a passing motorist on Tuesday evening near Alcácer do Sal, about 60 km from Lisbon. According to Portuguese television RTP, their backpacks contained complete changes of clothes, snacks, and water - suggesting they had been deliberately abandoned.

National Guard officers later arrested the children's 41-year-old mother and 55-year-old stepfather 170 km from where the boys were found. Both are French citizens from Colmar in Alsace.

The stepfather is reportedly a former French police officer who left the force in 2010 after being convicted of domestic violence against his then-wife. Portuguese media describe him as having struggled with long-term depression.

What's New Since Yesterday

According to French newspaper Dernières Nouvelles d'Alsace, the mother disappeared with the children "without any explanation" in May 2026, leaving behind a 16-year-old son from a previous relationship. Her family reported them missing in Colmar.

The children told rescuers their mother had blindfolded them "for a game" before leaving them in the woods. "When I looked in their backpacks, I immediately knew they'd been abandoned," said their rescuer, who needed French translation help to communicate with them.

Portuguese authorities have placed the boys with a foster family while arranging their return to France. Their biological father, who had supervised visitation rights, is expected to collect them.

European arrest warrants had been issued for the couple in France for child abduction and neglect of the 16-year-old. They face charges including child abuse in Portugal.

Legal Proceedings

During court appearances, the stepfather shouted "I love you" while the mother hummed a tune. The case has drawn widespread attention across Europe.

The mother describes herself online as a "sexologist" specializing in "body practices and specific trauma treatment." The stepfather reportedly met her "a few months ago."

State prosecutor Jean Richert told French media: "He understands it just as little as everyone else," referring to the stepfather's apparent confusion about the situation.

Cross-Border Challenges

The case highlights ongoing concerns about cross-border child protection issues in the EU. Authorities in both countries are cooperating closely on the investigation.

Portuguese police continue to gather evidence while French officials prepare extradition requests. The couple remains in custody awaiting formal charges.

Child welfare organizations have praised the quick response by Portuguese authorities but question how the family slipped through France's child protection systems.

Child Welfare Response

The boys are reported to be in good health despite their ordeal. Trauma specialists are working with them to process the abandonment.

Legal experts note the case could set precedents for handling transnational child abandonment cases within the Schengen Zone.
