Indicators of the Scale of the Disaster

GPS data from several mountaineers showed, according to consistent media reports, an altitude loss of between 500 and 1,500 meters within a very short time. This abrupt drop is considered an indicator of the enormous force of the avalanche. The devices of some of the missing continue to transmit signals, raising hopes that survivors may be in a sheltered position.

Pakistan is among the countries with the highest number of fatalities in high-altitude mountaineering. On neighboring K2 and Nanga Parbat alone, serious accidents have repeatedly occurred in the past. The Broad Peak, the world's twelfth-highest mountain, is considered technically demanding but somewhat less dangerous compared to neighboring peaks – nevertheless, avalanches and storms occur here regularly as well.

The rescue operation is being coordinated by Pakistani mountain rescue teams and the Alpine Club of Pakistan (ACP). International offers of assistance from Nepal and other mountaineering nations have also been received. Due to the thin air, strong winds, and the advanced hour of the day, helicopters have so far been able to take off only to a limited extent.

Rescue Operation Under Difficult Conditions

According to authorities, several Nepali mountaineers are also said to be among the missing. In addition, climbers from Oman are believed to have been part of the expedition. Official lists of participants have not yet been fully released.

Relatives of the missing have been informed according to local media reports. Numerous appeals for information and support are circulating on social networks. The Nepali mountaineering community responded with dismay to the news.

Representatives of the Alpine Club of Pakistan stated that the search will continue at first light. Weather forecasts predict changeable conditions with possible snowfall in the coming hours, which could further hamper the operation.

The region around Broad Peak lies in the Karakoram, one of the wildest and most sparsely populated high-mountain regions in the world. Rescue operations there are considered particularly risky, as even modern technology reaches its limits and recovery is often only possible within a narrow window of time.

If the suspicion is confirmed that Purja was indeed caught by the avalanche, it would be one of the most prominent losses in high-altitude mountaineering in years. After his record, Purja had made a name for himself as a motivational speaker and producer of outdoor content, among other things, and had only recently set out on new expeditions.
