Babler Warns Against Cooperation with Right-Wing Extremists and Calls for Consequences for FPÖ Youth

The allegations are directed against the Ring Freiheitlicher Jugend (RFJ), the youth organization of the FPÖ. In recent days, several media reports as well as indications from the House of Representatives have raised questions about connections between individual officials and mandataries and right-wing extremist circles. The debate over how to deal with the FPÖ youth had already flared up previously and reached a new peak on Tuesday with the Vice Chancellor's statement.

Criticism from the House of Representatives

Alongside Babler's appearance, further critical voices came from the SPÖ. According to internal party information, several mandataries see the incidents as evidence that the FPÖ has softened its programmatic demarcation from extremist positions. The Social Democrats announced that they would raise the issue in the National Council and, if necessary, initiate parliamentary steps.

Beyond the governing parties, the incidents also caused a stir. NEOS mandatory Douglas Hoyos as well as representatives of the Greens pointed out that a clear demarcation from right-wing extremism is not only a question of political hygiene but also of security policy. Green member Lukas Hammer stated that the latest revelations required a transparent investigation by the responsible authorities.

FPÖ Rejects Allegations

At the center of the debate is, among others, Maximilian Weinzierl, whose role within the Freiheitliche Jugend has been controversially discussed for days. Critics charge the FPÖ leadership around party chairman Herbert Kickl with failing to adequately control their own ranks and avoiding personnel consequences from the allegations. The FPÖ rejected the allegations and spoke of a media campaign against its own youth organization. In internal statements, it was said that the Ring Freiheitlicher Jugend stands on the ground of the liberal-democratic basic order and is unjustly placed in the vicinity of extremist circles. An internal review of the allegations has not yet been announced.

The discussion falls in a phase of heightened sensitivity to security issues in Austria. According to observers' assessment, the debate over the role of the Freiheitliche Jugend has direct effects on government formation and the future cooperation of the coalition parties. The SPÖ emphasized that it expects an unmistakable distancing from right-wing extremist positions from all partners.

Parliamentary Steps Announced

From the Federal Chancellery on Tuesday, it was said only that it had taken note of the Vice Chancellor's remarks. A substantive statement on the concrete allegations against the FPÖ youth was initially not issued. The federal government is thus under growing pressure to formulate clear criteria for dealing with right-wing extremist tendencies within political structures.

On Wednesday, further debates on the incidents are expected in the National Council. The SPÖ announced an urgent inquiry to the Interior Minister, in which the security authorities are to provide information on possible connections of individual officials to right-wing extremist networks. The judiciary could also address the question of whether actions relevant under criminal law are present.

The debate over the Freiheitliche Jugend is part of a series of similar controversies in recent years in which the demarcation from right-wing extremism has repeatedly been placed on the political agenda.
