Santiago de Chile, 24 September 2026
Chilean President Michelle Bachelet has withdrawn her candidacy for the position of UN Secretary-General, while the UN Security Council is still in the pre-selection of applicants.
With the move, Michelle Bachelet ends months of speculation about her possible return to the multilateral system, which she had already led between 2018 and 2022 as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. Her application had been followed with attention in diplomatic circles in Latin America and Europe.
The decision came at a stage in which the 15 members of the UN Security Council have, according to their own statements, not yet made a final selection. Before the next assumption of office of a Secretary-General on 31 [Month], the body goes through several informal consultation rounds in which the suitability of candidates is reviewed.
