The major British bank Barclays has announced the elimination of around 5,000 jobs, citing investments in artificial intelligence and other technologies as the reason for the move.
According to news agencies, the job cuts at Barclays will be carried out in stages. Around 1,000 positions were already cut in the first half of the year, with the remaining 4,000 jobs to be eliminated by the end of the current fiscal year. This brings the total workforce reduction to approximately 5,000 positions.
Group CEO C.S. Venkatakrishnan stated that the measures were „das Ergebnis der Investitionen, die wir über mehrere Jahre hinweg in Technologie getätigt haben und weiterhin tätigen". The term technology is likely to include applications related to artificial intelligence, which are increasingly being used in the banking sector to automate processes.
