Meta has started implementing a major layoff plan, cutting 8,000 jobs worldwide while redirecting resources toward artificial intelligence development.

The Facebook and Instagram parent company confirmed the layoffs on Wednesday, affecting approximately 10% of its 78,000 global workforce. An additional 6,000 currently vacant positions will remain unfilled as part of the restructuring.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg expressed regret about the job cuts in an internal memo. 'It is always sad to say goodbye to people who have contributed to our mission and to building this company,' he wrote, acknowledging shortcomings in internal communication.

The tech giant plans to reassign 7,000 employees to work on artificial intelligence projects as part of what Zuckerberg called 'one of the few companies capable of shaping the future.' Meta's AI investment this year will reach between $125 and $145 billion - more than double last year's spending.
