With the start of the new school year, a headscarf ban for girls at compulsory schools comes into force in Lower Austria, which the state government under State Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner regards as a protective measure for young girls.

The new regulation prohibits the wearing of a headscarf at Lower Austria's compulsory schools for girls below a certain age. State Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner had repeatedly justified the measure in recent months by saying she wanted to protect young girls. "And one of these rules is clear from this school year onward: No headscarves on the heads of little girls," she formulated the core of the ordinance.

Education State Councillor Christiane Teschl-Hofmeister explained that teaching staff in Lower Austria would receive every legally possible form of support to consistently implement the headscarf ban. The schools have been instructed to apply the regulation and to handle violations accordingly.
