Vienna, June 10, 2026
The Austrian national football player Christoph Baumgartner traveled to the ÖFB team camp in Santa Barbara on Wednesday, even though he suffered a serious injury to his front thigh at the beginning of June.
The injury occurred during the warm-up ahead of the ÖFB team's last test match on June 1 against Tunisia. The tendon of the rectus femoris muscle tore at the front thigh at the hip attachment — an injury that the ÖFB classifies as extremely rare. Baumgartner subsequently had to undergo surgery with a specialist in Turku, Finland.
As the Austrian Football Association announced on Wednesday, the 26-year-old from Lower Austria is currently being cared for by the ÖFB's medical team. The statement read verbatim: "Baumgartner wird dabei vom medizinischen Team des ÖFB in enger Abstimmung mit RB Leipzig betreut und seine Teamkollegen während der FIFA Weltmeisterschaft 2026 vor Ort unterstützen."
