Bavaria Commemorates King Ludwig II with New Monument and Memorial Service at Lake Starnberg

Memorial Service at Lake Starnberg

On Sunday, around 1,000 Ludwig fans attended a memorial service at Lake Starnberg, just a few meters from the spot where the king's body was found in the water 140 years ago. Representing the House of Wittelsbach, Ludwig Prince of Bavaria and his sister Auguste Princess of Lippe are expected at the service in Berg with their families. The faithful laid flowers at the cross erected on the shore in honor of the ruler.

The service ended with the Bavarian anthem. In doing so, the participants continued a tradition that has been maintained in the region for decades. A separate memorial service at Munich's Michaelskirche, where the king found his final resting place, is not planned for this year, according to the administration of the Duke of Bavaria.

New Permanent Exhibition in Starnberg

Alongside the memorial events, the permanent exhibition "Ludwig II. – Die letzten Tage des Märchenkönigs," covering the last four days of the monarch's life, opened on Sunday at the Museum Starnberg. The exhibition is devoted to the events between his removal from power at Neuschwanstein Castle and his death in Berg. In the Starnberg region, special guided tours tracing Ludwig II's footsteps, as well as further events at original locations from his life and his final days, have also been announced.

A King and His Legacy

Ludwig II was born on August 25, 1845, at Nymphenburg Palace in Munich. He ascended to the throne at 18. During his reign, he commissioned the construction of palaces such as Neuschwanstein, Linderhof, and Herrenchiemsee, which today rank among Germany's most famous buildings. His palaces were among the most technically advanced in Europe. Hundreds of thousands of visitors flock through the palaces of Ludwig II every year.

Despite this popularity, the circumstances of his death remain unresolved to this day. What exactly happened on June 13, 1886, on the shore of Lake Starnberg is still regarded as mysterious, even after 140 years. The new exhibition at the Museum Starnberg seeks to retrace the king's final days and open up new perspectives on the historical events.

With the weekend's commemorations, Bavaria has not only honored a significant monarch but also the cultural legacy left behind by Ludwig II. From the new monument at the Cornelius Bridge to the memorial service on the lakeshore to the new permanent exhibition in Starnberg, the program paints a multifaceted portrait of a ruler who sought to connect art, science, and technology — and whose death continues to raise questions.
