Bavaria’s Transport Minister Christian Bernreiter has called on the federal government to provide additional funding for regional rail services, citing the planned increase in track access charges from 2027.

The Free State of Bavaria wants significantly more funding from the federal government for regional rail services. At the transport ministers’ conference in Schwangau, Transport Minister Christian Bernreiter justified the demand by pointing to the planned increase in track access charges from 2027. This fee, which network operators charge railway companies for using the rail network, is set to rise under the federal government’s plans.

Bernreiter argues that the additional costs resulting from the increase in track access charges would significantly affect the states and their transport associations. Without increased federal funding, regional and suburban rail services in Bavaria could face service cuts. The states are responsible for ordering and financing regional transport services, but they cover a substantial portion of their funding with federal transfers.
