Thuringia has called on the federal government for financial compensation following a ruling by the European Court of Justice on rising track access charges in local rail passenger transport.

According to the Thuringian Ministry of Transport, the higher track access charges burden the state budget by billions. The state does not consider itself able to shoulder the additional costs alone and has therefore turned to the federal government. The background is a ruling by the European Court of Justice that has changed the previous practice of track access charge pricing.

Background: ECJ ruling and consequences

Transport Minister Steffen Schütz stated that the increased track access charges for local rail passenger transport threatened a successful mobility transition on rail as well as in local transport overall. Schütz is a member of the Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht. He said verbatim: "Aus Sicht des Freistaats bedrohen die erhöhten Trassenpreise für den Schienenpersonennahverkehr eine erfolgreiche Mobilitätswende auf der Schiene wie auch im Nahverkehr insgesamt".
