The Federation of German Industries (BDI) has warned of globally subdued economic growth as a result of the Iran conflict and the restrictions on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

The Federation of German Industries (BDI) sees the global economy significantly burdened by the Iran conflict and the associated disruptions in the bottleneck of the Strait of Hormuz. BDI Chief Executive Tanja Gönner stated that an even more pronounced global downturn in growth is to be expected if the conflict and the disruption to shipping through the strait persist.

Background: Bottleneck chokepoint

The background to the warning is the drastic collapse of shipping through the strategically important waterway. Before the Iran war in late February, more than 130 ships passed through the Strait of Hormuz in comparable periods. This figure has dropped sharply since the outbreak of the fighting, rendering one of the world's most important energy routes only usable to a limited degree.
