Utsunomiya, 09 June 2026
A bear that had been roaming freely for four days in the Japanese city of Utsunomiya was tranquilized near a residential building on Tuesday and loaded into a cage.
The bear had first been spotted on Monday in front of an elementary school and near a middle school in Utsunomiya, after which all schools in the city remained closed. Residents were urged not to go outside while dozens of hunters, police officers, and other emergency personnel, along with helicopters, searched for the animal. The bear was finally located on Tuesday near a residential building.
According to the news agency AFP, Issei Okabe, a 37-year-old painter whose child attends the elementary school in front of which the bear had been seen, reported that he had initially been surprised and then so relieved when he saw his home on television in reports about the capture of the animal. The bear had also been noticed in other places around the city, including a shopping center, a university, and a wholesale market. Hunters, police officers, and other emergency personnel surrounded the building and tranquilized the bear with a tranquilizer dart. The animal was then loaded into a cage on a delivery truck and taken away.
