Bear breaks into home in Shizukuishi and ransacks refrigerator

The case is part of a series of growing encounters between humans and bears in Japan. "Since April 1, there have been at least five deaths from bear attacks according to official figures," as the authorities announced. All five victims were to be mourned "in the northern Tohoku region." In addition, there had been few acorns in Japan's forests last year, "so the bears went elsewhere in search of food.

Growing bear population and its causes

Experts attribute the increase in attacks on humans to the rapidly growing bear population and the increasing depopulation of rural areas in Japan. Two bear species live in Japan: the Asiatic black bear, also known as the moon bear, as well as the larger brown bear. Japanese media regularly report bear sightings in shopping centers, parks, and at schools.

In the affected regions, authorities advise, among other things, "not to go into the mountains alone," "to attach a bell to your backpack when hiking," and "to carry bear deterrent spray."

Rules of conduct and protective measures

The incident in Shizukuishi ended safely, and the family remained uninjured according to police. Nevertheless, it illustrates the growing conflict between humans and animals in Japan's rural regions. Residents have been called upon not to leave food waste accessible in the open and to keep windows and doors closed at night.

The Japanese government and local administrations are stepping up their awareness campaigns in the Tohoku region. These include information evenings, warning signs on hiking trails, and the deployment of patrols in particularly affected villages. Farmers have also been called upon to secure their fields and farms against intrusion by wild animals.
