Berlin's Senator for the Interior Iris Spranger (SPD) has presented the digital tool "Gretchenfrage," intended to help Berliners protect themselves against misinformation online before a new House of Representatives is elected in March.

According to the senator, the new offering is specifically aimed at people who use social media and are confronted there with manipulative content. Spranger presented the tool on Tuesday in Berlin and emphasized that a democratic election can only proceed fairly if voters can rely on trustworthy information. "Gretchenfrage" is meant to help quickly classify doubtful claims.

Behind the tool is an interdisciplinary team that reviews and evaluates content from social networks. According to the Senate, anyone who reports a suspicious post receives a factual assessment of whether it is a false report, a misleading oversimplification, or reliable information. The goal is to keep the threshold for verification as low as possible.
