Berlin parties mount nearly a quarter million posters ahead of state election

Candidate-level placards add to the count

The candidate-level posters — not yet included in the roughly 250,000 figure — add a further layer to the campaign. SPD candidates, CDU candidates and those from other lists are supplementing the party branding with personalised placards featuring their names and photos. In several districts, campaign teams are coordinating the timing of pasting to ensure that their candidates' posters appear close to the party lists, maximising the chance that a passer-by reads both.

The logistical effort is substantial. Posters are mounted on lamp posts, construction fences, dedicated campaign columns and, where permitted, on private property with owner consent. Party offices in Berlin have organised volunteer shifts to handle the workload, which includes the production, transport and daily maintenance of the posters. Weather damage and vandalism are recurring issues, requiring teams to replace torn or defaced material throughout the campaign period.

Local authorities regulate the placement of campaign posters through temporary permits, with specific rules on where and how long material may be displayed. Berliners can expect the visual density to peak in the final weeks before the Abgeordnetenhauswahl, after which parties are required to remove their posters within a defined window.
