A 22-year-old Syrian has been sentenced to five years and four months in prison by the Berlin Regional Court for preparing a serious act of violence that endangered the state.

Background: Radicalization online

Presiding Judge Susann Wettley stated that the defendant was determined to carry out an attack. She literally said: "He was determined to carry out an attack." The chamber considered it proven that the man acted out of radical Islamist conviction and had been contemplating an attack since at least March 2025.

According to the court's findings, he planned to kill Jews and people he referred to as "infidels" in Berlin. He intended to first kill as many Jewish people and non-Muslims as possible with a knife and then carry out a suicide attack with a bomb belt. The target was a place where as many Jewish people as possible would be present – according to the court, he was thinking of a restaurant or a bar.
