Berlin, 04 June 2026

Berlin's Governing Mayor Kai Wegner (CDU) has formally dismissed digital state secretary Matthias Hundt, who will nonetheless receive roughly €50,700 in transitional pay despite a tenure of just 69 days and an open insolvency investigation into his former consulting firm.

The Berlin Senate dismissed Matthias Hundt, Berlin's Digital State Secretary, on Tuesday of the week preceding publication, bringing a turbulent tenure to an end. Hundt had initially requested his own dismissal one week earlier but withdrew that request once he learned that stepping down at his own initiative would strip him of the statutory transitional allowance. Under civil service rules, the Senate was therefore obliged to carry out the dismissal itself, which is what triggered the payout of approximately €50,700 in Übergangsgeld.
